Deadly Crash on South Westnedge Avenue Leaves One Dead

*KALAMAZOO* — A 52-year-old man died after being struck in a hit-and-run crash Wednesday evening near Axtell Street and South Westnedge Avenue in Kalamazoo, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

The crash occurred just before 9:10 p.m., and police officers were at the scene investigating around 8:45 p.m., according to multiple news reports. First responders found the victim in the roadway with catastrophic injuries. EMS personnel determined he was dead at the scene.

The victim's name will not be released until his family is notified, said the public safety department.

Witnesses reported seeing two vehicles driving fast in the area when the crash happened, according to Fox 17.

Road Closure and Investigation

South Westnedge Avenue was closed to southbound traffic between Axtell Street and West Crosstown Parkway while police investigated the crash. The road has since reopened.

The Kalamazoo County Consolidated Dispatch Authority first reported the road closure just before 9:10 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Suspect Vehicle Located in Galesburg

Using FUSUS technology, investigators were able to locate the suspect vehicle in Galesburg without its driver. The vehicle was found unoccupied.

Investigators are still working to find the people who were using the suspect vehicle, said KDPS.
