A cash assistance program that puts $4,500 directly into the hands of new mothers is now available to families in Comstock, giving local childcare providers a new tool to help parents who struggle with the cost of raising a child.

The Rx Kids program expanded Monday into three more Kalamazoo County communities: Oshtemo Township, the city of Galesburg, and Wakeshma Township, according to a report from FOX 17. Families in Comstock have been eligible since the program first launched in the county.

How the program works

Rx Kids gives eligible families a one-time payment of $1,500 during pregnancy, followed by $500 per month for the first year of a child's life, according to program materials.

Families must be at least 16 weeks pregnant at enrollment. Newborns must be born on or after June 1, 2026, according to WWMT. There are no income requirements.

"What happens in pregnancy, what happens in early infancy, shapes an entire life course," said Dr. Mona Hanna, founding director of Rx Kids and associate dean of public health at Michigan State University.

A Comstock perspective on childcare costs

At the Child Life Center in Comstock, Program Director Chazlyn Flint said the expansion brings much-needed support to families already navigating high childcare costs.

"Definitely childcare. That is one of the biggest expenses, is childcare," Flint said, according to FOX 17.

Flint expects the program to have a positive ripple effect on childcare operations in Kalamazoo County.

"More consistency with enrollment, and just attendance," Flint said.

Study links cash support to better birth outcomes

A study published in The Lancet Public Health in May found that Rx Kids grants reduced pre-term births and low birth weights, and prevented neonatal intensive care unit admissions, according to Michigan Public.

Dr. Sumit Agarwal, a professor of internal medicine and health management and policy at the University of Michigan, led the study. He said the cash transfers increased access to prenatal care and reduced smoking in the third trimester.

"These results show that we can really trust families and moms to meet their needs by giving them unconditional cash," Agarwal said, according to Michigan Public.

Enrollment numbers and expansion

According to program leaders, nearly 94% of eligible families in Kalamazoo have already enrolled in Rx Kids, WWMT reported.

Rx Kids first launched in Flint in 2024 before expanding to more than 40 communities across Michigan. State leaders announced earlier this year that the program would continue expanding statewide, with 20 additional locations planned for this summer, according to Michigan Public.

The program receives funding from donors such as the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and from public funds, according to Michigan Public.
