Local Favorite Expands Footprint

Kalamazoo County pizza lovers have another reason to celebrate as Kazoopy's Pizza and Grinders prepares to open its fourth location this May in Texas Township.

The family-owned business, operated by Scott and Maria Strawhun, plans to dedicate the new store on Sunday, May 3, 2026, with the grand opening to the public on Monday, May 4.

The new location will be situated at 6040 S. 12th St. in Texas Township, directly on the Texas Township-Portage border. The building previously housed an insurance company, coffee shop, and most recently a real estate agency before Kazoopy's moved in.

"We are always keeping our eyes open to grow, turning over every rock, I like to call it," said Scott Strawhun. "And we pass by that roundabout all the time. It really was my wife that said that would be a great Kazoopy's ... one day I saw what she was saying and I said 'yeah, I think you are right and we got to work on it.'"

The Strawhun family has been involved in Kazoopy's story since 2014, when they purchased the brand from founder Mark Rogers. Rogers named the business after "Kalamazoo Pizza Pies" and had opened the first location in 2007 on South Westnedge Avenue before moving it to Mattawan. He shut down the business and sold it to the Strawhuns before helping them resurrect the brand.

The Strawhun family now operates three existing locations:

  • 1908 W. Main St. in Kalamazoo Township
  • 5030 Gull Road in Comstock Township
  • 8126 W. Main St. in Oshtemo Township

"It truly is a family affair," Scott Strawhun said. "We just love doing what we do. We feel grateful for being able to do it and being received by the community and we love to give back where we can."

Faith-Based Dedication

The family plans to dedicate the new location before opening, a practice rooted in their strong faith-based values.

"Our family is strongly faith-based, and so we believe to be good stewards of what God's given us is we dedicate it before we open and just pray over the safety of everyone that comes and leaves and everyone that works there," Scott Strawhun explained. "So we'll pray over it and dedicate it, eat some pizza and ice cream and get ready to open."

Initial plans call for the new location to operate from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, with abbreviated hours on Sundays if open. Like the other locations, the restaurant will close one day each week, though Strawhun hasn't decided which day it will be.

Family Involvement

All three of the Strawhun children are heavily involved in the business, with each working at a different location. The family includes Edwin, Sarah, and Ana Strawhun, along with parents Scott and Maria.

"It truly is a family affair," Scott Strawhun said. "We just love doing what we do. We feel grateful for being able to do it and being received by the community and we love to give back where we can."

The new location will feature the same variety of offerings as the other stores, including pizza, grinders, sandwiches, and calzones. A highlight is Kazoopy's own hand-scooped Buttercups Ice Cream, with 16 flavors available. While most flavors come from a partner dairy, two rotating flavors are made in-house.

"It's an opportunity to increase business and also create more jobs," Strawhun said. "One of the biggest things we love doing, is a lot of kids that come through here, it's their first job."

Pickup and Delivery Focus

Like the other locations, the new Kazoopy's will primarily operate on pickup and delivery. Strawhun hopes to eventually add small tables for outside seating.

The Strawhun family continues to expand Kazoopy's as long as they are able, viewing their business as a way to serve the community and create opportunities for local youth.
