Family-Owned Pizza Chain Expands With New Location on Texas Township-Portage Border

*KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI* — Kazoopy's Pizza and Grinders fans will soon have a new destination for their pizza cravings. The family-owned restaurant is opening its fourth location this May at 6040 S. 12th St. in Texas Township, situated right on the Texas Township-Portage border.

The new building previously housed an insurance company, coffee shop, and most recently a real estate agency before Kazoopy's moved in. The business is dedicated to serving the community with quality pizza, grinders, calzones, and their signature Buttercups Ice Cream.

We are always keeping our eyes open to grow, turning over every rock, I like to call it, said Scott Strawhun. And we pass by that roundabout all the time. It really was my wife that said that would be a great Kazoopy's ... one day I saw what she was saying and I said yeah, I think you are right and we got to work on it.

A Family Affair Since 2014

The Strawhun family has been involved with Kazoopy's since 2014, when they purchased the brand from founder Mark Rogers. Rogers originally named the restaurant after Kalamazoo Pizza Pies and opened the first location in 2007 on South Westnedge Avenue before moving the business to Mattawan.

Ana Strawhun pulls a pizza from the oven on Tuesday, April 1, 2025 at Kazoopy's Pizza and Grinders / Naples Calzone Co., 5030 Gull Road in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

It truly is a family affair, Scott Strawhun said.

The family business includes all three of their children — Edwin, Sarah, and Ana — who each work at a different location. The business operates as a true family affair with everyone involved in daily operations.

Existing Locations

The new store joins three other Kazoopy's locations across Kalamazoo County:

  • 1908 W. Main St. in Kalamazoo Township
  • 5030 Gull Road in Comstock Township
  • 8126 W. Main St. in Oshtemo Township

Grand Opening Plans

Plans call for the store to be dedicated on Sunday, May 3, with employees, friends, and family present. The grand opening will take place on Monday, May 4, 2026.

Our family is strongly faith-based, and so we believe to be good stewards of what God's given us is we dedicate it before we open and just pray over the safety of everyone that comes and leaves and everyone that works there, he said. So we'll pray over it and dedicate it, eat some pizza and ice cream and get ready to open.

Hours and Hours

Initial plans have the new location operating from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, with abbreviated hours on Sundays. Like the other locations, the restaurant will be closed one day a week, though Strawhun hasn't decided which day yet.

Its an opportunity to increase business and also create more jobs, Strawhun said. One of the biggest things we love doing, is a lot of kids that come through here, its their first job.

Signature Buttercups Ice Cream

In addition to its variety of pizza, grinders, sandwiches, and calzones, the new location will sell 16 flavors of Kazoopy's own hand-scooped Buttercups Ice Cream among other ice cream treats. The majority of the flavors available will be sourced from a partner dairy, but Kazoopy's will always have two rotating flavors that are made in-house.

Pickup and Delivery Focus

Like the other locations, the new Kazoopy's will be primarily pickup and delivery-based. Strawhun hopes to eventually add some small tables for outside seating.
