Undercover Operation Targets Commercial Sexual Exploitation in Southwest Michigan
*CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich.* — A university professor at a large Michigan university was one of two people arrested during a major multi-agency human trafficking enforcement operation in Calhoun County Monday.
The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Tribal Police said the sting operation was part of a broader effort to combat commercial sexual exploitation across the region.
Nearly 60 People Contacted by Undercover Officers
According to the NHBP Tribal Police, undercover officers communicated with almost 60 individuals seeking to exchange money or contraband for sex during the investigation.
Multiple people traveled to designated meeting locations and were detained by law enforcement. Authorities noted that some of those detained traveled more than 50 miles to reach the site.
"This operation highlights the ongoing concern surrounding commercial sexual exploitation and related criminal activity in Southwest Michigan," the agency said in a release.
Two Men Arrested, Additional Charges Pending
Of the people detained during the operation, two men were arrested and are currently held in the Calhoun County Jail.
Law enforcement officials identified one suspect as a college professor at a large Michigan university. The second suspect was already on federal probation for possession of child pornography.
The NHBP has not released the names of either arrested individual at this time. Authorities stated that additional criminal charges will be submitted to the county prosecutor's office following further investigation.
"It also underscores the importance of proactive, intelligence-driven, and collaborative enforcement efforts among partner agencies," the Tribal Police added.
Multi-Agency Collaboration Yields Results
The operation involved multiple law enforcement agencies working together across county lines. Partners included:
- Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Potawatomi Tribal Police
- Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Tribal Police
- St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department
- Branch County Sheriff's Office
- Calhoun County Sheriff's Department

Victim Support and Community Outreach
Beyond the arrests, law enforcement emphasized a victim-centered approach to the investigation.
Investigators detained a woman at the scene and, after interviewing her, offered access to social service resources. Authorities stated they plan to follow up with her in an effort to help break the cycle of exploitation.
"The remaining people who showed up to Monday's undercover operation have been banned from returning to the area and may be arrested for trespassing if they return," according to the NHBP.
Ongoing Investigation Continues
Authorities confirmed that the investigative process continues with additional in-person interviews and the execution of search warrants.
Law enforcement officials are gathering cellphone data, social media accounts, and banking information from those involved in the operation.
The investigation remains active as authorities work to identify and charge any additional suspects who may be connected to the human trafficking ring.
