Witness Held Motorcyclist in Her Arms Before Driver Fleed the Scene

Nicole Botimer was at a Speedway gas station on Gull Road when she saw a black Jeep Grand Cherokee turn in front of 28-year-old Azariah Smith. The Jeep struck the motorcycle. Smith was thrown from the bike. Botimer rushed to help. She held Smith in her arms for an extended period. She spoke to him. She said it was horrible. Every time she closes her eyes, she sees the crash.

The crash happened just before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on Gull Road. Smith was heading east. The Jeep turned into his path. The collision took place near Nazareth Road. Smith was rushed to a nearby hospital. Police confirmed Smith later died at the hospital.

Driver Fled Before Police Arrived

Botimer said she panicked at first. She tried to help Smith. She held him the whole time. She did not want to see anybody die alone. The driver of the Jeep sped away before police and medics arrived. Officers later found the Jeep at the driver's home according to the Kalamazoo Township Police Department.

Botimer said she returned to the Speedway gas station Friday. She placed crosses with flowers there. She is calling for justice for Smith and his family.

Botimer said any driver that hit and ran needs to take accountability. She said people need to slow down.
