*A person died Saturday evening after a house fire near North Main Street and North Sherwood Avenue in Plainwell, according to the Plainwell Department of Public Safety.*

The incident happened around 8:25 p.m. when a firefighter from the Martin Fire Department was driving in the 400 block of North Main Street when smoke and flames were seen coming from a home. The firefighter immediately used their fire radio to call dispatch, which allowed Plainwell Public Safety to send the first on-duty officer to the scene.


Mutual Aid Response

Due to the severity of the fire, Plainwell Public Safety requested mutual aid from multiple fire departments in the area. The Gun Plain Fire Department, the Martin Fire Department, and the Otsego Fire Department all responded to assist with the incident.

Fire crews entered the home minutes after being alerted and found heavy black smoke coming from the front of the home, with visible fire in multiple rooms. A second fire crew then went inside to locate the victim after learning about a person inside the residence.

The victim was transferred to a waiting ambulance and was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials confirmed the victim is believed to be the only occupant of the home.
