KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A 20-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder for his role in a fatal Christmas Eve crash in Kalamazoo.

Monday, Elham Muzamel Hamid, 20, was arraigned on the charge and was given a $5,000 personal recognizance bond, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS).

The charge against Hamid stems from a fatal collision at the intersection of Hutchinson Street and South Burdick Street on Dec. 24. Officers say Marcie Nance, 68, had stopped at the intersection of Hutchinson Street and was attempting to turn north onto South Burdick Street when she was hit at high speed by Hamid.

Nance was found inside one of the two heavily damaged cars left at the scene of the crash. She was pulled out of the car and was given life-saving aid, but died, according to KDPS.

Nearly three months later, the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor's Office authorized the charge against Hamid Thursday. He was then arrested Friday, officers said.

Hamid is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause conference on April 2, followed by a preliminary examination on April 9, according to court records obtained by News Channel 3.
