Residents Advised to Boil Water for Hours as Pressure Drops from Water Main Break
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — A boil water advisory issued Wednesday in Battle Creek has been canceled after city officials confirmed no bacteria contamination was found in the water supply.
The advisory, prompted by a water main break, affected a portion of Cliff Street, several homes on Douglas Street, and a part of Main Street in the city.
"The City of Battle Creek has determined it is no longer necessary to use bottled water or to boil tap water before drinking or cooking," city officials wrote in a Thursday release.
What Happened When Pressure Dips
When a water main breaks, it causes a sudden drop in water pressure throughout the affected system. This pressure drop creates an opening for coliform bacteria and other contaminants to potentially enter the water supply through cracks in the pipes or at connection points.
State regulations require utilities to take immediate action when pressure drops below a safe threshold. The City of Battle Creek Department of Public Works issued the advisory on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, as a precautionary measure.
"The advisory was issued as a precaution, and crews are working to restore pressure as soon as possible," city officials said in a Wednesday release.
Rapid Response and Testing
After completing follow-up sampling and testing, the city found that no coliform bacteria was present in the water supply. This allowed officials to safely cancel the boil water advisory later that day.
The quick response demonstrates the city's commitment to public health safety. Water utilities across the region face similar challenges when infrastructure issues arise, and rapid testing and response are critical to minimizing public health risks.

What Residents Should Know About Boil Water Advisories
Boil water advisories are issued when there is a potential for bacteria or other contaminants to enter the water supply. While the advisory in Battle Creek has been canceled, here's what residents should know:
- Boil water before drinking, cooking, or preparing food during an advisory
- Do not use tap water for brushing teeth, making ice, or preparing infant formula unless boiled first
- Water boils at 212°F and should be boiling for one full minute to kill bacteria
- Let cool before consuming
- Keep bottled water on hand if you have health conditions that make you more vulnerable to bacteria
Why Water Main Breaks Happen
Water main breaks are often caused by:
- Aging infrastructure — many water systems were built decades ago
- Freezing temperatures — frozen ground can stress pipes
- Construction work — nearby digging can damage water lines
- Corrosion — metal pipes degrade over time
- Ground shifts — soil movement can crack or break pipes
The Battle Creek Public Works department regularly maintains and repairs the water system to prevent these issues. When breaks do occur, crews work quickly to restore service and ensure water safety.
