Veterans Health Administration Announces Major Investment in Battle Creek VA Campus
*BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The Battle Creek VA Medical Center is set to receive nearly $14.5 million in federal funding to modernize, repair, and improve buildings across its campus, according to the office of Congressman Bill Huizenga* (R-MI).
The funding is part of the Veterans Health Administration's Non-Recurring Maintenance Program, which was announced by the Trump administration in January as a $4.8 billion initiative to address critical facility needs at VA medical centers nationwide.
"Our veterans deserve the best care available and that can't happen unless we invest and make improvements to the facilities where our veterans receive care," said Congressman Bill Huizenga.
What The Money Will Buy
The investment will cover several essential improvements needed to maintain operational capability and advance health care delivery at the facility. According to Huizenga's office, the projects include:
- HVAC system upgrades across multiple buildings
- Building safety improvements to enhance overall security
- Elevator replacement in multiple buildings across the campus
- Two additional sump pumps to address water management concerns
"The projects include maintenance, replacements or upgrades needed to maintain the facility, and advance health care delivery," Huizenga's office stated.
The Non-Recurring Maintenance Program funds one-time maintenance projects for facilities, equipment, or infrastructure that are not part of routine, recurring maintenance. This distinguishes it from ongoing operational budgets and allows for significant capital improvements that might otherwise be deferred.
Context for the Investment
The Battle Creek VA Medical Center serves veterans throughout Calhoun County and surrounding areas in southwestern Michigan. The facility provides comprehensive health care services, including primary care, specialty care, mental health services, and rehabilitation programs.
This announcement comes during a period of increased federal attention to VA facility conditions. The Trump administration has made facility improvements a priority, directing billions in funding to address aging infrastructure at medical centers across the country.
"I am glad to see these important investments being made to improve infrastructure, safety, and care at the Battle Creek VA," said Huizenga. "Our veterans deserve the best care available and that can't happen unless we invest and make improvements to the facilities where our veterans receive care."
What This Means for Veterans
The upgrades will directly impact the daily lives of veterans who use the facility. Modern HVAC systems will improve indoor air quality and comfort. Building safety improvements will enhance security for patients and staff. New elevators will improve accessibility throughout the campus. And additional sump pumps will help prevent water damage issues.
These improvements are part of a broader effort to modernize VA facilities that serve thousands of veterans across the country. The Non-Recurring Maintenance Program addresses critical infrastructure issues that fall outside routine maintenance budgets, allowing for substantial investments in facility upgrades.
The Battle Creek VA Medical Center will work with VA administrators to implement these improvements efficiently, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing patient care while enhancing the facility for future use.
