International Competition Coming Home

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. — The FAI North American Balloon Championship is scheduled to return to West Michigan for the first time in over three decades, promising a significant economic boost to the region. The championship will take place in Richland from August 17-22, 2027, and is expected to draw tens of thousands of visitors.

The event represents a major victory for local tourism efforts, with officials describing it as a "trip worthy event" that will shine an international spotlight on Kalamazoo County. The championship was last hosted in the United States in 1993 in Battle Creek, with Kalamazoo having previously hosted the event earlier in 1963.

"It's a great day for the region," Kelly Stecco Compton with Shamrock Marketing and Consulting said. "It will shine an international light on Kalamazoo as we have balloon pilots from all over North America joining for this competition."

Gull Meadow Farms to Host the Event

The upcoming championship will be held at Gull Meadow Farms, a venue already known for hosting the Kalamazoo Balloon Festival. Justin Wendzel, owner of Gull Meadow Farms, emphasized the event's aim to foster community engagement and create lasting memories for families.

"Our goal out here at the farm has really just been to bring individuals and families, allow people to kind of come together, to hang out together, to really just to make memories together," Wendzel said.

Kalamazoo County secured the event through a competitive bidding process, according to officials. The location was chosen for its proven track record and ability to host large-scale events.

Economic Impact Expected

Discover Kalamazoo President and CEO Jane Ghosh highlighted the importance of tourism to the local economy, noting that it supports 7,000 jobs, which accounts for 7 percent of the county's workforce. Ghosh added that visitors typically spend more than $770 million annually in Kalamazoo County.

"This is a trip worthy event," Discover Kalamazoo President and CEO Jane Ghosh said. "Tourism is very important to Kalamazoo County."

Community Engagement and Accessibility

Tickets for the balloon championship will be free, but parking fees will apply, organizers noted. This approach ensures broad community access while maintaining operational viability.

The championship is expected to bring together balloon pilots from across North America, showcasing the sport at the highest level of competition. The event will feature demonstrations, competitions, and entertainment for spectators of all ages.

Other 2027 Events on the Horizon

Discover Kalamazoo is also preparing for other major events in 2027, including the Gilmore Piano Festival and the United States Tennis Association Junior Boys Nationals, which are expected to attract additional visitors to the region.
