Community Vigilance Pays Dividend as Fisherman's Technology Saves Law Enforcement Hours

*ALMENA TOWNSHIP, Mich.* — What began as a routine fishing trip turned into one of the most unusual vehicle recovery operations in Van Buren County history. A fisherman using modern sonar technology spotted a stolen pickup truck submerged beneath Wolf Lake, leading to its successful recovery after six months underwater.

The incident highlights the growing role of citizen vigilance and advanced technology in assisting law enforcement efforts across Southwest Michigan.

The Discovery

On March 25, 2026, a citizen fishing on Wolf Lake in Almena Township noticed something suspicious while using his Garmin LiveScope sonar system. The forward-facing sonar detected an object in the water approximately 25 feet beneath the surface.

The fisherman immediately contacted the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office and shared photographs captured from the sonar, which clearly showed a vehicle submerged in the lake.

"The recovery of this stolen vehicle highlights the importance of public vigilance and the value of new technologies like sonar in assisting law enforcement," said Sheriff Daniel E. Abbott, Van Buren County Sheriff.

The Recovery Operation

The next day, March 26, 2026, members of the Van Buren County Dive Team conducted a full-scale dive operation at Wolf Lake. Working with the support of the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office Drone Team, which provided overhead aerial support and safety monitoring, the dive team successfully located and recovered the submerged vehicle.

The stolen truck had been reported missing from Kalamazoo County in October 2025, making it approximately six months underwater at the time of recovery.

"Due to being submerged for approximately six months, the vehicle had become a habitat for aquatic life," according to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office.

In a remarkable display of care for the environment, dive team members took special precautions during the recovery operation to safely return fish and other wildlife that had taken up residence in the vehicle back into Wolf Lake.

The Vehicle

The recovered vehicle was identified as a Dodge Ram pickup truck that had been stolen from Kalamazoo County over half a year prior. The truck had reportedly been dumped in the lake by thieves who wanted to conceal the evidence of their crime.

The vehicle had become an unintended home for fish and other aquatic life during its extended stay underwater. The six-month submersion had taken its toll, transforming what was once a working vehicle into a habitat for the local ecosystem.

Ongoing Investigation

While the vehicle has been successfully recovered, the investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Authorities are working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the theft and subsequent disposal of the stolen truck.

The case demonstrates how community members can play a crucial role in solving crimes that might otherwise go unresolved. The fisherman's quick thinking and use of modern technology provided law enforcement with the lead they needed to recover stolen property.

"It also demonstrates the resourcefulness of local authorities in responding to tips from citizens and deploying specialized teams to address complex cases," noted the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office.

The Importance of Community Engagement

This case serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of community engagement in public safety. The fisherman's willingness to report what he saw, combined with his use of modern sonar technology, made all the difference in solving this case.
