Vehicle Hits Herd of Deer, All Four Passengers Taken to Hospital

PORTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A herd of deer entered the roadway on M-40 Saturday night and struck the driver's vehicle, leaving four people injured according to Cass County authorities.

The crash occurred when a 65-year-old driver was traveling northbound on M-40 in Porter Township. Deer entered the roadway and the driver hit one of the animals, causing the vehicle to crash. Three other passengers were in the vehicle at the time including a 38-year-old and two children.

All four occupants were taken to Beacon Hospital in Three Rivers for injuries sustained in the collision.

Cass County deputies responded to the scene and began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deer-vehicle collision. The incident highlights the ongoing risk of wildlife encounters on rural roads, particularly during spring when deer are more active.

Porter Township residents have reported increasing deer activity in recent weeks, with multiple sightings along M-40 and nearby roads. The township has been working with local conservation groups to manage the growing deer population and reduce road accidents.

Deer Collisions Remain Major Safety Concern on Rural Roads

Wildlife-vehicle collisions continue to be a significant safety issue throughout Cass County and the broader Kalamazoo region. Drivers are advised to stay alert, reduce speed in areas with high deer activity, and keep proper distance when following other vehicles.

The National Deer Safety Foundation reports that more than 1.5 million deer-vehicle collisions occur annually in the United States, with spring and fall being the most dangerous times due to breeding seasons.

Cass County Sheriff's deputies recommend the following safety measures when driving in areas with known deer populations:

  • Reduce speed when approaching wooded areas
  • Use high beams during dusk and dawn when deer are most active
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions while driving
  • Keep headlights on even during daylight hours

Three Rivers-based Beacon Hospital has treated multiple deer-related injuries in recent months. Hospital staff say the injuries range from minor to serious, depending on the force of the collision and the animals struck.
