A narrow win after a November defeat

*Galesburg-Augusta Community Schools voters approved an $11.24 million bond proposal on May 5, passing the measure 964 to 880* after the identical ballot request failed just six months earlier.

The proposal gives the district authority to borrow funds for building renovations, instructional technology upgrades, and a new transportation facility to replace a center built in the 1950s.

According to WWMT, the bond centers on three priorities identified by Superintendent Lindsey Newton: improving safety and security, mechanical upgrades, and addressing aging infrastructure across district buildings.

Several buildings across Galesburg-Augusta Community Schools are reaching the end of their lifespan, and the signs are showing.

The bond is expected to result in zero net millage increase over the current 6.4 mill levy, according to the district. A homeowner with a property market value of $100,000 would pay approximately $320 per year, the district estimated.

What the money funds

According to the WWMT report, the bond will address several specific projects:

  • Roofing repairs across aging district buildings
  • HVAC system upgrades at multiple schools
  • A new transportation center to replace the 1950s-era facility
  • Safety and security improvements district-wide
  • Instructional technology acquisition and installation
  • Building remodeling and furnishing

A flipped result from November

The same bond proposal appeared on the November 2025 ballot and lost. District leaders did not change the request for the May election.

Newton told WWMT that the district's needs did not change between the two votes.

It may be a new year, but the district's needs didn't change.

The May 5 election saw 52.28 percent of voters support the measure, according to unofficial results reported by the Watershed Voice. That is a margin of 84 votes between the yes and no columns.

Neighboring districts split on bonds

The Galesburg-Augusta vote was one of several school bond measures on the Kalamazoo County ballot that day.

Comstock Public Schools voters rejected a $23.7 million bond proposal by a vote of 1,291 to 1,159, according to WKZO. That was Comstock's second attempt at a bond measure after voters rejected a larger $31.8 million proposal in November.

Vicksburg Community Schools voters approved a $64.1 million bond proposal by a vote of 1,714 to 1,345, according to WWMT. That measure will fund a new transportation facility, an auxiliary gymnasium, and an outdoor education center.

The Galesburg-Augusta bond is the first major funding win for the district since its November loss, and district officials say construction planning will begin as soon as the results are certified.
