Family-Owned Pizza Chain Feels Pressure on Delivery Costs

*KALAMAZOO, Mich.* — The ongoing conflict with Iran is making itself felt at the family-owned pizza shops and restaurants across Kalamazoo, Michigan in ways customers may not immediately notice.

At Kazoopy's Pizza and Grinders, operations manager Scott Strawhun said higher fuel prices are affecting the day-to-day reality for drivers who rely on their vehicles to get orders out on time.

"When considering ordering delivery, they think about that driver and wrap that in until the total bill," Strawhun said.

Unlike larger chains that may have broader resources to offset rising costs, locally-owned restaurants often feel those increases more directly.

Delivery Drivers Balancing Higher Expenses

Local delivery drivers, in particular, are balancing higher expenses at the pump while continuing to provide the same level of service. Strawhun noted that the impact extends beyond just the delivery aspect of the business.

"Rising fuel prices can have a broader ripple effect across the industry," Strawhun said.

In past periods of high gas costs, restaurants have seen added fees from suppliers and service providers, increases that can eventually reach businesses and customers alike.

Unexpected Trend Helps Ease Burden

For now, Strawhun said continued community support remains critical. Choosing to order local, he said, helps sustain jobs ranging from entry-level workers to experienced staff, and keeps small businesses operating in an increasingly unpredictable economy.

"Customers, he said, appear to be more aware of those added costs, and are tipping more as a result," Strawhun said.

Statewide Gas Price Surge

Michigan is experiencing one of the most significant gas price spikes in years. According to the Michigan Department of Energy, gas prices have risen to $3.89 per gallon, up from $2.99 per gallon — a spike of approximately 30 percent and the highest since the summer of 2023.

Michigan drivers are paying 97 cents per gallon more than this time last month and 82 cents per gallon more than this time last year.

Governor's Emergency Response

In response to the crisis, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared an energy emergency in eight Southeast Michigan counties amid rising gas prices across the state. The order suspends summer gasoline rules to provide relief at the pump.

National Context: Iran War Impact

The situation is part of a broader national trend. According to Time magazine, Trump's war with Iran has pushed U.S. gas prices above $4 per gallon for the first time since 2022, squeezing household budgets and raising fears of further increases as global oil markets remain volatile.

Food Distributors Add Fuel Surcharges

The impact extends beyond restaurants. According to The New York Times, delivering salmon, fruits and other perishable foods has become more expensive as the war with Iran pushes up diesel prices.

Fresh food distributors across Michigan have begun adding fuel surcharges to their delivery fees, adding another layer of cost for local grocery stores and restaurants that rely on these suppliers.

Community Impact

For family-owned businesses like Kazoopy's, the economic pressure is real but manageable with community support. The business has been operating in Kalamazoo for years, and local customers have shown continued loyalty despite the economic headwinds.

"For now, Strawhun said continued community support remains critical," the WWMT report stated.

Looking Ahead

As gas prices remain elevated amid ongoing overseas conflict, some Kalamazoo businesses are feeling the impact in places customers may not immediately see — the cost of delivery, increased operational expenses, and the broader economic uncertainty affecting small businesses throughout Southwest Michigan.
