City Adds Funding to 48-Unit Development Aiming to Combine Stable Housing With Recovery Services
*KALAMAZOO, Mich.* — City officials have approved $350,000 to expand a substance recovery housing project in the Edison neighborhood, bringing the city's total financial support to more than $1 million for the initiative.
The project, called Kalrecovery, will be a 48-unit development built at 333 E. Alcott St. in the Edison neighborhood. The development is being coordinated by Edison Community Partners, a real estate development firm based in Kalamazoo.
Multi-Building Design With Recovery Amenities
The 6.6-acre site will feature three buildings designed to support those enrolled in problem-solving courts while providing stable, affordable housing combined with recovery services.
The development includes:
- A three-story elevator-serviced building with 36 one-bedroom apartments for individuals in recovery, including two on-site recovery coaches
- Two-story walk-ups with 12 two- and three-bedroom units for families with a household member in recovery
- Shared amenities including group therapy spaces, counseling offices, walking trails, community gardens, and a play area
Affordable Rent Through Project-Based Vouchers
Residents will pay no more than 30% of their income in rent through Michigan State Housing Development Authority project-based vouchers. All utilities will be included in the housing costs.
On-Site Support Services
Through a partnership with Integrated Services of Kalamazoo, local health providers, and Kalamazoo County courts, the project will provide 40+ hours of on-site services weekly, including:
- Substance use and mental health counseling
- Medication-assisted treatment
- Vocational training and financial literacy programs
- Peer recovery support and life skills training
Building on Previous City Investment
This funding announcement builds on earlier city investments in recovery housing projects. The city has been working to expand housing options that address both shelter and support needs for people overcoming substance use disorders.
The project aims to provide a comprehensive approach to recovery by combining stable housing with ongoing support services that help residents sustain sobriety and rebuild their lives.
Edison Community Partners said the development represents a significant investment in addressing substance use disorder while providing pathways to recovery and stability for Kalamazoo residents.
