Kalamazoo County commissioners are expected to vote Tuesday night on approving a design for a massive mural that will cover most of the new downtown parking structure.

A subcommittee has selected local artist Patrick Hershberger for the commission. Hershberger will be painting a couple of the panels himself but will mostly be designing what 31 of the larger panels will look like.

The panels will depict sketches of local leaders, local flora and fauna, and other local scenes. County Administrator Kevin Catlin has advised commissioners that they need to get the art project underway this month if they hope to have the huge panels ready in time.

As first reported last month, Hershberger is a well-known muralist in the Kalamazoo area whose work can be seen across the region. His previous murals have included the "GOBONUSSAVES" installation in the Edison neighborhood.

Even though they haven't broken ground yet on the project, Kalamazoo County Administrator Kevin Catlin has advised commissioners that they need to get the art project underway this month if they hope to have the huge panels ready in time, WKZO reported.

The project represents a significant investment in downtown Kalamazoo's visual landscape and aims to create lasting public art that celebrates the community's people and place.
