A man wanted in the January shooting death of a 31-year-old Kalamazoo man was arrested in Louisiana, bringing a long manhunt to an end.
Dakwon Johnson, 21, was taken into custody on May 28 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.
Johnson was wanted on open murder and felony firearm charges in connection with the death of Tyler James Patrick, 31. Patrick was shot on January 25 on Reed Avenue near S. Burdick Street in Kalamazoo.
A shooting on Reed Avenue
Officers responded to reports of shots fired around 10 p.m. on January 25, according to KDPS.
When they arrived at the scene, they found Patrick with a gunshot wound to the back. He was transported to a hospital where he later died.
KDPS executed three search warrants following the shooting. Officers seized three handguns, a rifle and additional evidence tied to the killing.
A 43-year-old man was arrested on weapons charges at the time. KDPS said Johnson was believed to have fled West Michigan after the shooting.
A months-long search
The arrest comes more than four months after Patrick's death.
In April, Silent Observer announced a $1,000 reward for information leading to Johnson's arrest, according to the tip line.
KDPS did not immediately say what led to Johnson's arrest in Louisiana.
"Authorities in Louisiana arrested a man wanted in connection with a January 2026 murder in Kalamazoo," the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety announced on social media.
KDPS did not provide additional details about the arrest or Johnson's upcoming extradition.
