Five victims. Three attacks. One suspect in custody.

*Darius Dagonne Williams, 45, was arraigned Monday on five counts of assault with intent to murder and three counts of assault with intent to rob after a string of knife attacks that sent five people to the hospital in Kalamazoo*.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said Williams was taken into custody Monday morning in Berrien County. Court records show his formal arraignment began at 8:30 a.m. A $100,000 bond was set, according to mlive.com.

The June 30 attacks

Two separate assaults happened on Tuesday, June 30, in the same neighborhood near North Edwards Street and East Ransom Street.

"Officers said they do not believe Williams has a home and attacked other unhoused people," according to KDPS.

  • Around 4:40 p.m., police responded to a reported knife attack. Court documents state Williams punched a man and slashed him in the face with an open folding utility knife with a hooked blade, mlive.com reported. The victim suffered a severe laceration and was taken to a local hospital.
  • Around 9:25 p.m., police responded to the same area for a second attack. Officers found three male victims with serious lacerations, KDPS said. All three were treated at local hospitals.

After each attack, Williams fled the scene, police said.

The March attack

The first assault happened around 4:30 a.m. on March 28 on S. Westnedge Avenue near Axtell Street, according to WOODTV.

Police said Williams attacked a 41-year-old man with a machete after an argument. The victim was treated at the hospital for his injuries.

The investigation

KDPS detectives first asked the community for help finding Williams on Wednesday, describing him as a "person of interest" in the June 30 attacks, WOODTV reported. Williams was also wanted on an active child support warrant at the time, according to WWMT.

The charges are split into three separate cases for each incident, according to court records cited by WWMT. Two of the cases involve one charge each of assault with intent to murder. The third case contains the remaining six charges against Williams.

Williams and all five victims are homeless, investigators said at the time of the June attacks.

What happens next

Williams remains in custody. His next court date has not been announced.
