Kalamazoo Public Works Crews Begin April Leaf Pickup After Early Winter Weather Leaves Overwintered Debris Across City

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — After West Michigan endured an unusually early and harsh winter last fall, the City of Kalamazoo announced its public works crews will begin collecting overwintered leaves next month. The cleanup operation will address significant yard waste left on lawns and streets throughout the city.

Crews will start with the western side of the city, or Zone A, on April 6. Public works will then move to the central area of the city, or Zone B, before finishing up on the east side, Zone C, as time, weather, and workloads allow, officials said.

The city's yard waste collection program -- which accepts bagged or boxed leaves -- will also begin service in April. Officials said after April 30, any remaining leaves must be set out according to yard waste program guidelines in bags, boxes, or bundles for regular collection.

What Happened Last Fall

The City of Kalamazoo explained that the area experienced an early start to winter weather last fall, leaving behind substantial amounts of yard waste that residents struggled to clear. The cold temperatures and snowfall caused leaves to freeze to the ground and remain in place for extended periods.

This weather pattern created a unique challenge for homeowners and the city's public works department. Many residents found themselves unable to rake and bag leaves before the winter set in, leaving the overwintered debris scattered across lawns and streets.

Zone-Based Cleanup Plan

The city has implemented a systematic approach to handle the cleanup effort. Zone A covers the western side of Kalamazoo and will be the first area addressed. Zone B encompasses the central portion of the city, while Zone C includes the eastern neighborhoods.

Officials emphasized that the cleanup schedule remains flexible and will adjust based on several factors:

  • Weather conditions and potential delays
  • Workload capacity of public works crews
  • Community needs and feedback
  • Resource availability

The city's website provides more information about zones, accepted items, and other collection inquiries for residents who have questions about the process.

Yard Waste Collection Guidelines

Along with the street cleanup, the city's yard waste collection program will also activate in April. This program accepts leaves that homeowners have properly bagged or boxed for disposal.

Residents are reminded that after April 30, any remaining leaves must be prepared according to the yard waste program guidelines. This means:

  • Leaves must be bagged, boxed, or bundled
  • Materials should meet city specifications for yard waste
  • Improperly prepared debris may not be collected during regular pickup schedules

Community Impact

The cleanup operation addresses both aesthetic and practical concerns for Kalamazoo residents. Overwintered leaves can create hazards on walkways and streets, and they contribute to water runoff issues if not properly managed.

The city's approach ensures that the cleanup happens in an organized manner that minimizes disruption to residents while addressing the environmental and safety concerns that arise from winter debris.

What Residents Should Do

The city recommends that Kalamazoo residents prepare for the upcoming cleanup by:

  1. 1.Reviewing the city's website for zone information
  2. 2.Ensuring any remaining yard waste is properly prepared before April 30
  3. 3.Staying informed about pickup schedules through local news sources
  4. 4.Contacting public works with any questions about the process

The cleanup effort represents a significant investment in maintaining Kalamazoo's infrastructure and ensuring that residents can enjoy spring without the burden of winter debris.

More information about zones, accepted items, and other collection inquiries can be found on the city's website.

Looking Ahead

As public works crews prepare to begin their work, the city expects the cleanup operation to run efficiently throughout April and into early May. The systematic zone-by-zone approach should allow for thorough coverage while minimizing disruption to residents.

The city will continue to monitor weather conditions and adjust schedules as needed to ensure the cleanup happens effectively.
