# Kalamazoo Township Breaks Ground on $45M New Township Hall and Police Station
Kalamazoo Township will break ground on a new 100,000-square-foot community campus this summer, according to township documents. The $45 million project will bring a brand new facility to 3006 Douglas Avenue by summer 2028, per township records.
The new community campus will host both administrative offices and the township's police headquarters. The facility features several distinct elements designed to serve the community.
A New Look for Government and Public Safety
The administrative portion of the building will welcome residents with a circle driveway leading to a rustic wood and stone entrance. The board room can accommodate seating for 108 people during public meetings and community events.
The public safety side includes an elevator for moving evidence, garages for vehicle maintenance, and an exercise area with updated locker rooms.
The 1977 building was designed for a smaller township staff and police force, said Superintendent Tracie Moored. In addition to cramped, outdated office and meeting spaces, its plumbing, HVAC system and structural integrity are giving out.
Property Purchase and Future Plans
The township purchased the property near Mosel Avenue for $1 million in 2024. The board is considering selling its current home about three miles away at 1720 Riverview Drive.
The $45 million Community Campus project will be funded through capital funds, according to a 2024 press release. Developers have built several sustainable features into the preliminary designs, including drought-tolerant landscaping and the use of local, recycled materials in the construction.
The anticipated summer 2028 opening date falls just before a presidential election, according to Clerk Lisa Mackie. Should there be delays, it could impact election workers' home base.
Community Engagement
The board chambers will have seating for 108 people, television screens, and a large projector screen and be able to be used as a community space. Seating can be moved around the space to accommodate any size crowd or community event.
Every municipality has certain issues that attract large crowds from time to to some, said Andrew Schipper of construction manager AVB.
The township said provisions for a new fire station are also being considered.
Addressing Current Needs
Superintendent Tracie Moored said the current building has needed revitalization for a long time.
This development will have a domino effect of positive change, and I'm looking forward to working hard on these needed improvements, said Moored.
The property was strategically chosen for its accessibility and potential to improve service delivery across the township.
Leadership Perspective
I think it's beautiful and fitting for this township, and we need more people to fill those seats, said Supervisor David Combs. I don't want to create is a situation where we have 100 or 200 seats in a boardroom that are never used.
The Kalamazoo Township Board of Trustees unanimously approved the $1 million land acquisition of 17.3 acres for the development of a new town hall and police department during their Monday night meeting on September 9, 2024, according to WWMT.
