Local Favorite Expands Footprint With New Store on Portage Border

*TEXAS TOWNSHIP, MI* — Kalamazoo County pizza lovers will soon have another option when Kazoopy's Pizza and Grinders opens its fourth location at 6040 S. 12th St. in Texas Township.

The new restaurant, owned and operated by Scott and Maria Strawhun, is scheduled to open its doors on Monday, May 4, 2026, following a dedication ceremony on Sunday, May 3.

"We are always keeping our eyes open to grow, turning over every rock, I like to call it," said Scott Strawhun. "And we pass by that roundabout all the time. It really was my wife that said that would be a great Kazoopy's... one day I saw what she was saying and I said 'yeah, I think you are right and we got to work on it.'"

The building at the Texas Township-Portage border previously housed an insurance company, coffee shop, and most recently a real estate agency before the Strawhun family took over.

A Family Affair Since 2014

The Strawhun family has been involved with Kazoopy's since 2014, when they purchased the brand from founder Mark Rogers. Rogers named the business after "Kalamazoo Pizza Pies" and opened the first location in 2007 on South Westnedge Avenue before moving it to Mattawan.

"It truly is a family affair," Scott Strawhun said.

After buying the brand, Rogers helped the Strawhuns resurrect Kazoopy's while operating a small location inside Dougherty's Corner Market in Oshtemo Township. The family then opened their second location in Kalamazoo Township in 2016 and moved the Dougherty's location to 8126 W. Main St. in 2021, a year before opening a third location on Gull Road in Comstock Township.

The Strawhun children are heavily involved in the business as well. Ana, Edwin, and Sarah each work at different locations.

"We just love doing what we do. We feel grateful for being able to do it and being received by the community and we love to give back where we can," Strawhun said.

Grand Opening Plans

The family plans to dedicate the new store on Sunday, May 3, with employees, friends, and family present. The dedication ceremony will include prayer and pizza before the grand opening on Monday.

"Our family is strongly faith-based, and so we believe to be good stewards of what God's given us is we dedicate it before we open and just pray over the safety of everyone that comes and leaves and everyone that works there," he said. "So we'll pray over it and dedicate it, eat some pizza and ice cream and get ready to open."

The new location will operate from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, with abbreviated hours on Sundays. Like the other locations, Kazoopy's will be closed one day each week, though Strawhun hasn't decided which day yet.

Menu and Community Impact

The restaurant will serve pizza, grinders, calzones, and 16 flavors of Kazoopy's hand-scooped Buttercups Ice Cream. While most flavors come from a partner dairy, two rotating flavors are made in-house.

"It's an opportunity to increase business and also create more jobs," Strawhun said. "One of the biggest things we love doing, is a lot of kids that come through here, it's their first job."

The location will primarily operate on pickup and delivery, with plans to eventually add some outdoor seating.
