Three Arrested After Weapons Patrol On Kalamazoo's East Side

KALAMAZOO — Three people were arrested on Thursday after Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers seized four firearms during two separate investigations on the city's east side.

The arrests involved an 18-year-old man, a 21-year-old man, and a 22-year-old man. Police said the 16-year-old boy who was present at one scene was released to a guardian pending further investigation.

First Stop Near Phelps Avenue

KDPS officers first spotted the 18-year-old near Phelps Avenue and Charles Avenue carrying a concealed weapon in his waistband. When officers tried to make contact, the young man ran off and threw the gun onto a nearby roof.

Officers said they arrested him shortly after, according to WWMT.

The 18-year-old was arrested for resisting and obstructing along with weapons offenses.

Second Stop Near Gull Road

About a mile away near Gull Road and Texel Drive, officers observed a 21-year-old man concealing a gun under his jacket while walking with a 22-year-old man and 16-year-old boy.

Investigators followed the group for a little less than two miles before making contact with the 21-year-old who they arrested after he ran off, according to WWMT.

The gun recovered from the 21-year-old was marked as stolen from the city of Kalamazoo.

The 22-year-old and 16-year-old walked away when officers approached the 21-year-old but were later detained. Investigators saw the 22-year-old toss a gun into a nearby dumpster.

Three Adults In Custody

When officers searched the dumpster, they found two additional guns. The three adults are currently being held in the Kalamazoo County Jail.

The total number of weapons seized during both investigations was four guns, though only three were pictured in KDPS photos.
