Fatal Collision at Hutchinson Street and South Burdick Street Leads to Second-Degree Murder Charge

*KALAMAZOO, Mich.* — A 20-year-old man faces second-degree murder charges after a high-speed collision on Christmas Eve killed a 68-year-old woman in Kalamazoo.

Elham Muzamel Hamid, 20, was arraigned Monday on the charge and was released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

The fatal crash occurred at the intersection of Hutchinson Street and South Burdick Street on December 24. Officers say victim Marcie Nance, 68, had stopped at the intersection and was attempting to turn north onto South Burdick Street when she was struck at high speed by Hamid.

Nance was found inside one of the two heavily damaged vehicles left at the scene. Emergency responders pulled her from the wreckage and administered life-saving aid, but she died, KDPS confirmed.

Prosecutor's Office Takes Months to Authorize Charges

Nearly three months after the December 24 collision, the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor's Office authorized the murder charge against Hamid. He was then arrested Friday, KDPS officers said.

Hamid is scheduled to appear in court again for a probable cause conference on April 2, followed by a preliminary examination on April 9, according to court records obtained by News Channel 3.

The timeline shows the gravity of the case and the thorough investigation that preceded the formal charges.

Community Mourns Loss, Family of Victim Seeks Justice

The Christmas Eve crash cut short the life of Nance, who was in her 60s. The KDPS released her photo Monday as part of the investigation, showing a local woman whose sudden death has rippled through the community.

KDPS investigators continue to work the scene and gather additional evidence. The department thanked the public for their patience during this difficult investigation.

Legal Proceedings Move Forward

Hamid's next court date will be critical as prosecutors build their case. The second-degree murder charge carries significant penalties and requires the state to prove the defendant's actions directly caused Nance's death.

Attorneys for Hamid will have the opportunity to present their side during the probable cause hearing scheduled for April 2.

KDPS Reminds Community of Safe Driving During Holidays

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety reminds the community that drunk driving remains a significant danger, especially during holiday seasons. Officers continue to patrol and enforce traffic laws to keep everyone safe on Michigan roads.
