Justice Served for Marcus Ford After Seven-Year Cold Case
James Edward Reed faces a mandatory life sentence after being convicted of first-degree murder in the 2018 shooting death of Marcus Kyle Ford.
The conviction came after more than seven years of investigation by the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.
Conviction Details
On Tuesday, April 21, 2026, a Kalamazoo County Circuit Court jury found 29-year-old James Reed guilty of first-degree premeditated murder, two counts of felony firearm, felon in possession of a firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon.
The court will sentence Reed on May 27, 2026. Kalamazoo County Circuit Judge Pamela L. Lightvoet will preside over the sentencing hearing.
Reed is currently serving a separate sentence with the Michigan Department of Corrections related to assault, weapons, and drug offenses.
The Crime
Marcus Ford was shot and killed just after 1:30 a.m. on November 17, 2018. The shooting occurred in the 600 block of Douglas Avenue in Kalamazoo.
The case remained unsolved for years despite multiple investigative efforts by law enforcement.
Renewed Investigation Leads to Charges
After a renewed investigation by KDPS detectives, authorities authorized charges against Reed on November 8, 2024.
KDPS Captain Danielle Guilds praised the perseverance and commitment to truth that led to the conviction.
"We are grateful to the jury for their careful attention and dedication throughout this process," Guilds said. "We also recognize the prosecutor's diligence and resolve in pursuing justice."
Guilds added that the outcome extends support to Marcus Ford's family whose strength and trust have endured through years of uncertainty.
"The case had remained unsolved for several years despite multiple investigative efforts by the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety," according to the KDPS release.
What's Next
Reed now faces a mandatory life sentence for the killing of Ford, who was 32 years old at the time of the shooting.
KDPS maintains that the renewed investigation and continued work by detectives ultimately led to the conviction after years of uncertainty for the Ford family.
