STURGIS, Mich. — A 19-year-old Sturgis man was hospitalized after crashing his motorcycle following a police pursuit in the city of Sturgis on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026.

According to the Sturgis Department of Public Safety, just before 3:45 p.m. an officer attempted to stop a motorcycle for a traffic violation. The motorcyclist fled, and the officer initiated a pursuit that ended a short time later.

A citizen alerted the officer that a motorcycle had turned onto Maystead Road at a high speed. The rider, identified as a 19-year-old Sturgis resident, was struck in the crash and taken to a Kalamazoo hospital with injuries sustained in the accident.

Police said they will be requesting charges related to the pursuit. The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office, LifeCare Ambulance, and Burr Oak Fire Rescue all assisted on scene.

Sturgis police have not released further details about the suspect or the charges that may be filed.
