A large, flat wooden surface floating atop blue barrels has become something of a local mystery after striking at least two bridges along the Kalamazoo River in Battle Creek.

Witnesses told WWMT-TV the barge appeared to begin its journey upstream of the Angell Street Bridge, where it struck the structure before passing underneath and eventually colliding with the 20th Street Bridge downstream.

The barge has now remained at the second bridge, where it is currently moored with a green strap after the incident.

The barge was first spotted Monday and has remained at the second bridge, where it is now moored with a green strap.

John Konner, who captured photos of the floating object, theorized it may have originated from an upstream construction site, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Konner's photos show the barge was covered in plastic when it struck the first bridge, but it has since lost its covering.

The City of Battle Creek said it is aware of the situation but has not revealed any answers about how the floating object arrived or why it appeared to drift downstream.

The incident has drawn attention from locals curious about the origins of the mysterious barge and what might have caused it to strike multiple bridges in its path.
