Veterans Health Administration Announces Major Investment in Southwest Michigan

*BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The Battle Creek VA Medical Center is set to receive nearly $14.5 million to revitalize buildings on its campus, according to the office of Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-MI)*.

The funding is part of the Veterans Health Administration's Non-Recurring Maintenance (NRM) Program, which was announced by the Trump administration in January at a total of $4.8 billion nationwide.

"Our veterans deserve the best care available and that can't happen unless we invest and make improvements to the facilities where our veterans receive care," said Congressman Bill Huizenga.

What the Funding Will Cover

The projects include maintenance, replacements, or upgrades needed to maintain the facility and advance health care delivery, according to Huizenga's office.

Specific improvements will include:

  • Modernize HVAC systems to improve indoor air quality and temperature control
  • Upgrade overall building safety measures throughout the campus
  • Replace elevators in multiple buildings on the VA campus
  • Install two additional sump pumps to manage water drainage and flooding concerns

Building Safety and Care Delivery

The Battle Creek VA Medical Center has long served as a vital healthcare resource for veterans across Calhoun County and Southwest Michigan. The investment comes as the facility works to maintain high standards of care while addressing aging infrastructure.

"The projects include maintenance, replacements or upgrades needed to maintain the facility, and advance health care delivery," according to Huizenga's office.

Trump Administration's NRM Program

The Non-Recurring Maintenance Program was established to address significant deferred maintenance challenges at VA facilities nationwide. The $4.8 billion package announced in January was designed to fund critical repairs and upgrades that had been postponed for years.

The program targets facilities across the country, with each VA medical center receiving funding based on specific needs assessments. Battle Creek's allocation of $14.5 million reflects the significant investment required to modernize aging systems and improve safety.

Local Impact

The Battle Creek VA Medical Center serves hundreds of veterans in the region, providing primary care, specialty services, mental health support, and rehabilitation programs. The facility has been a cornerstone of veteran care in Southwest Michigan for decades.

Congressman Huizenga has been a strong advocate for veteran services in the region, consistently seeking federal funding to improve facilities and programs at the Battle Creek VA. His office has been vocal about the importance of investing in the infrastructure that supports veteran health care delivery.

Looking Ahead

The funding will be distributed to address the most critical needs identified at the facility. While specific timelines for implementation were not announced, the Battle Creek VA Medical Center expects the improvements to begin within the coming months.

The upgrades will help ensure that veterans continue to receive the high-quality care they deserve, with modern facilities that meet current safety standards and support the diverse health needs of the veteran population served by the center.

"Our veterans deserve the best care available and that can't happen unless we invest and make improvements to the facilities where our veterans receive care," said Congressman Bill Huizenga.
