A Failed Yield Led to a Pinned Truck Driver and Two Serious Injuries

A crash near Plainwell left two drivers hospitalized in serious condition after a passenger vehicle failed to yield to a semi-truck hauling crushed asphalt.

The Allegan County Sheriff's Office said the collision happened around 3 p.m. Monday, June 8, at the intersection of 106th Avenue and 11th Street in Gun Plain Township.

According to Sheriff's Sergeant Ryan Rewa, a southbound vehicle failed to yield the right of way to a westbound semi-truck. The impact caused the truck to lose control and overturn on 106th Avenue, spilling its load of crushed asphalt across the road.

Driver Pinned Inside Overturned Cab

The semi-truck driver was trapped inside the overturned cab for a period of time before emergency crews could extricate him, according to the sheriff's office.

Both the truck driver and the driver of the passenger vehicle were taken to local hospitals with serious injuries. No names were released.

"Both drivers were hospitalized with serious injuries after the crash Monday afternoon in Gun Plain Township," according to the Allegan County Sheriff's Office.

MLive reported that motorists were advised to avoid the area as deputies closed the intersection for an extended period while crews cleared the spilled asphalt and moved the overturned truck.

Investigation Underway

The crash remains under investigation by the Allegan County Sheriff's Office. Sergeant Rewa did not disclose whether charges would be filed against either driver.

Residents in the area experienced significant traffic disruptions as the intersection remained blocked for most of the afternoon. Emergency responders from multiple agencies worked through the day to clear the scene.

Gun Plain Township is located just north of Plainwell in Allegan County. The intersection of 106th Avenue and 11th Street is a busy rural crossing used by both commuters and commercial traffic.
