A permanent place to gather
The Portage Zhang Farmers Market has a permanent home. After years of operating out of the Portage City Hall parking lot, the market moved into a new covered structure at 125 East Centre Avenue in Portage. City leaders, community members, and donors gathered Tuesday, May 26, for a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the opening.
The market's first official day at the new location is Sunday, May 31, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
How the project got funded
The $3.25 million project was financed through a combination of public and private dollars. According to WWMT NewsChannel 3, the funding broke down as follows:
- $1 million donated by Charles and Lynn Zhang
- $1.75 million from the State of Michigan
- $500,000 from the City of Portage
City officials say the new structure gives vendors an easier setup process and protection from harsh weather conditions. The project also creates a long-term gathering space for the community.
A space built for connection
Lynn Zhang spoke at the ribbon cutting about what the market means to the community. She said the market is about more than shopping. She called it a place where neighbors, families, and local businesses can connect face-to-face in an increasingly digital world.
"It's a physical space like this where neighbors can shake hands, not emojis. A space like this builds and strengthens the community."
Portage Mayor Patricia Randall highlighted the market's inclusivity during the ceremony. She said the market accepts two food assistance programs administered by the city: SNAP and Double Up Food Bucks. She also noted that WIC and Senior Project Fresh are now accepted directly by vendors.
"There's always something for someone and you don't have to come with bushel baskets and buy a ton of things. You can just come and get a treat for your kids, listen to the music, and be present."
What changes for vendors and shoppers
The new structure features an awning that provides a dry, shaded area for vendors, residents, and visitors. According to WWMT, the design is intended to support local farmers, small businesses, and community events for generations to come.
The market relocated from the City Hall parking lot to its permanent site on Centre Avenue. The new location is designed to handle the full summer season of vendors and shoppers with improved infrastructure.
The Portage Zhang Farmers Market is named for donors Charles and Lynn Zhang, who also previously donated to the Portage Zhang Senior Center, another community anchor in the city.
