Historic Tradition Returns to Bronson Park for Landmark 75th Anniversary
*KALAMAZOO, MI* — The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts Fair will mark a significant milestone this year as it celebrates its 75th anniversary in June 2026. The event, recognized as the second oldest continuously running juried art fair in the United States, brings together artists from across the country to showcase their work in downtown Kalamazoo's historic Bronson Park.
From its humble beginnings as the "Clothesline Art Show" in 1951, the fair has grown into a nationally recognized celebration of artistic excellence that draws thousands of visitors each year. This landmark 75th edition promises to honor the fair's rich history while looking forward to its continued role in strengthening the Kalamazoo community.
A Legacy of Artistic Excellence
The fair's origins date back to 1951 when the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts launched the event to provide local artists with an opportunity to exhibit and sell their work. What started as a simple display has evolved into a juried fair that attracts talented artists from across the United States and Canada, drawing crowds of over 40,000 visitors in recent years.
"It's been 75 years since the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts Fair got its start as the Clothesline Art Show in Bronson Park," said Ryan Boldrey, who covers the event for the Kalamazoo Gazette and MLive.
The tradition fills up the downtown park with art and music each year on the first weekend of June, creating a vibrant atmosphere that energizes the entire Kalamazoo community.
This Year's Celebration
The 75th fair will be held on Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6 at Bronson Park, located at 200 S. Rose St. in downtown Kalamazoo. The event takes place from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
This year's fair will feature up to 145 artists working across 12 distinct mediums. Visitors will have the opportunity to shop for an impressive array of items including jewelry, photography, pastels and prints, sculptures, leather, ceramics, paintings, wood and glass creations, and more.
"The 75th KIA Arts Fair is both a celebration of our history and a reflection of our future," said Michelle Hargrave, executive director of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts.
"For generations, this event has made art accessible, supported artists, and energized downtown Kalamazoo. It's also a powerful reminder of the role the arts play in bringing people together, fostering creativity, and strengthening our region. As a community-focused art institution, we're proud to continue that legacy — inspiring new audiences, celebrating artists, and helping to shape the vibrancy of our city."
Family-Friendly Entertainment and Activities
Beyond shopping for art, the fair offers numerous activities designed to engage visitors of all ages. Kids' activities will be available throughout both days, alongside live artist demonstrations led by the Kirk Newman Art School. These demonstrations provide unique insights into the creative process and allow attendees to learn directly from skilled artists.
Live music, sponsored by the KIA and Sounds of the Zoo, will continue throughout the weekend. A complete music schedule will be released closer to the event date. Food trucks and seating will also be available throughout the event, giving visitors numerous dining options while they explore the art offerings.
Awards and Recognition
The fair recognizes artistic achievement through several cash awards, including "Best in Category" winners, "Student Award" recipients, and a new addition this year: the Discover Kalamazoo People's Choice Award. All awards will be announced at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 6.
Attendees can vote for the people's choice award on Friday afternoon and evening, giving the community direct input into recognizing the most beloved artistic contributions of the weekend.
Free Access to KIA Galleries
Throughout the event, art lovers will also be able to visit the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts at 314 S. Park St. for free. This will provide the last opportunity for visitors to take in the "Future Now: Virtual Sneakers to Cutting-Edge Kicks" exhibition before it closes on Sunday, June 7.
Part of JumpstART Summer
The KIA Arts Fair is an integral component of JumpstART Summer weekend, which encompasses several annual events that transform downtown Kalamazoo into a vibrant celebration of community. Alongside the art fair, JumpstART features Art on the Mall, the Do Dah Parade, and Kalamazoo Pride, creating a multi-day festival atmosphere that showcases the diversity and creativity of Southwest Michigan.
