Walnut Trees Cut Down and Removed While Homeowner Was Out of Town

*VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI* — Several walnut trees were cut down and stolen from a residential property in Hartford Township while the property owner was out of town, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office.

The theft occurred in Hartford Township, a rural community west of Kalamazoo, and investigators believe a white truck was in the area around the time of the crime.

Police said this isn't the first instance of walnut tree theft in the area. In an unrelated 2024 incident, Trever Wallace was arrested and later sentenced for stealing a walnut tree on October 10. Wallace received a sentence of three years and two months up to 10 years in prison for the offense.

Sheriff Daniel Abbott's office issued a news release Wednesday, April 2, asking anyone with information about the theft to call the sheriff's office at 269-657-3101.

Property Damage and Community Concerns

Walnut trees can be valuable assets for homeowners, providing both shade and a source of nuts. When these trees are cut down and removed, it represents significant property damage and loss.

The Hartford Township incident highlights growing concerns about property crime in rural Southwest Michigan. Homeowners are increasingly reporting thefts of outdoor fixtures, equipment, and even landscaping elements.

Investigation Underway

The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office is actively investigating the theft. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and seeking tips from the community.

Anyone with information about the stolen walnut trees is urged to contact the sheriff's office. The case remains open and under investigation.

Police Ask Community for Help

"Investigators ask anyone with information to call the sheriff's office at 269-657-3101," the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

The theft represents more than just financial loss for the property owner. It also impacts the aesthetic and environmental value of the property, and may leave gaps in shade and wildlife habitat.

Wider Context

The Hartford Township walnut tree theft joins a growing list of property crimes affecting rural Michigan communities. As property values rise and outdoor living spaces become more important to homeowners, thefts of landscaping and property fixtures are becoming more common.

The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office continues to work with local law enforcement to combat property crime across the region.
