A Portage family is still reeling after a pickup truck crashed into their home while they were sleeping, and the driver fled the scene on foot.

The crash happened Sunday morning in the Amberly neighborhood just after 3:20 a.m., according to family members who spoke to News Channel 3.

Lt. Nicholas Mattson of Portage Public Safety confirmed that police are investigating the crash with the intention of filing criminal charges.

"The driver did, in fact, flee the scene on foot after the accident," Lt. Mattson said.

Lt. Mattson also confirmed that it is believed alcohol was a factor in the incident.

Kristi, one of the homeowners, described the impact as feeling like an explosion that immediately woke up everyone inside the house.

"I heard the horn," Kristi said. "Lamps flew."

Kristi and her husband had their two children, ages 7 and 14, outside within minutes of the crash, but the driver was gone.

"It breaks my heart because..." Kristi said. "He just ran..."

According to Kristi, police were pulling the truck from the house and took out beer cans from the scene.

The truck was registered to a 20-year-old man with an address just blocks away from the crash site, according to police.

Officers attempted to speak with a family member at the suspect's home, but were met by someone who refused to answer questions, Lt. Mattson told News Channel 3.

At this point, police are relying on evidence left behind at the scene to build a case against the driver.

The family is asking any neighbors who may have heard or seen anything to contact police, especially if they captured security footage of the truck in the early morning hours of April 26.

No one inside the home was hurt in the crash, but the incident caused serious damage.

Kristi said a gas line in the basement was found to have snapped, which leaked gas into the home.

Engineers also determined the crash shifted the home six inches off its foundation.

The house has since been boarded up, but damage remains visible, including crumbled bricks and tire marks in the yard.

"This is our home. It's our safe spot," Kristi said. "And now, we feel unsafe."

Kristi said her son's bedroom is directly above where the truck hit, and he has not slept there since the crash.

"The fear is there," she said. "We have so many children that they soccer on that front lawn that he just blew through. Grandkids that play in the driveways."

"I mean, he could have killed four or five, or... himself," Kristi said. "And will he do it again?"
