A familiar Kalamazoo breakfast name returns to the map

*Berries Pancake House is preparing to open a new location in Texas Township. The restaurant will move into the Texas Corners business district at 7265 West Q Ave*, adjacent to the Texas Township Hall, according to township documents reviewed by Conven.

The development marks a shift for the local breakfast chain. Berries closed its downtown Kalamazoo location in July 2024, just a year after opening there. A restaurant called Legacy Table replaced it in the former space, the Kalamazoo Gazette previously reported.

Mixed-use plans and a $1 million price tag

The new building will be two stories. The first floor will hold 3,695 square feet of restaurant space for Berries. The second floor will be built out for housing, with at least one residential unit, per township documents.

Plans include outdoor seating for about 40 people and 24 parking spaces, said Kelly McIntyre, Planning Director for Texas Township.

The site plan was approved by the planning commission on Tuesday, May 27, with conditions, McIntyre said. Once minor adjustments are made, the plans will return to the township for administrative approval. Developers will not need to go before a township board for further approval, she said.

Bosch Architecture owns the land and is acting as the developer, McIntyre said. Steve Bosch, president of Bosch Architecture, expects to break ground on the project within a month. The business would take ownership in the fall, Bosch said.

"I want to have an old school downtown feel," Bosch said.

The site has room for seven two-story, mixed-use buildings, per township documents. A commercial space like this one will cost around $1 million to build, Bosch said. Smaller units would run $400,000 to $500,000.

What Berries serves

Berries' current location at 4311 S. Westnedge Ave. offers Greek specialties and breakfast and lunch options. The menu includes omelets, pancakes, burgers, sandwiches, skillets, crepes, salads and wraps, according to Conven.

Chris Mavrakis, owner of Berries, said agreements for the Texas Corners location have not been finalized yet, per Conven.

The Texas Corners district

The currently vacant field sits in the Texas Corners business district. The development will offer a mix of retail, restaurant, office and residential space, per city documents cited by Conven.

The project represents one of the first commercial structures planned for the vacant lot, which has sat unused while neighboring properties have seen activity in the Texas Township corridor.
