One dead after single-vehicle crash on wooded stretch of W. S Avenue

A man died in a single-vehicle crash on a wooded stretch of W. S Avenue in Texas Township last Friday, and the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office says speed is believed to have played a role.

Deputies responded to the crash around 4:45 p.m. on May 29 in the 6500 block of W. S Avenue, between S 8th Street and S 10th Street, north of Schoolcraft, according to a sheriff's office statement.

The only occupant of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash," the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office said in a statement released Friday.

Authorities have not released the identity of the man who died. The investigation remains open, the sheriff's office said.

Multiple agencies responded

The crash drew response from several agencies, according to WKZO.

  • Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office
  • Michigan State Police
  • Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety

The sheriff's office is asking anyone with information about the crash to contact them or Silent Observer, the tip line for Kalamazoo County law enforcement.

A dangerous stretch of road

W. S Avenue runs through a largely rural section of Texas Township. The crash site sits between S 8th Street and S 10th Street, a stretch of road bordered by wooded property and farmland.

Texas Township has seen other traffic fatalities in recent years, though officials have not released a count of crashes along W. S Avenue specifically.

The sheriff's office did not say whether the driver was speeding at the time of the crash or whether other factors, such as weather or road conditions, contributed to the accident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office or Silent Observer.
