United Airlines Pushes Back Chicago Flight Start Date Due to O'Hare Capacity Issues
The Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport has postponed the launch of United Airlines service to Chicago, moving the start date from April 30 to June 1.
Airport officials announced the delay stems from temporary capacity constraints at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, which prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to place restrictions on both United Airlines and American Airlines.
In response, United decided to push back the start date for all airports receiving expanded service, according to Kalamazoo-Battle Creek Airport Director Craig Williams.
What Was Planned
The original announcement in January had outlined a significant expansion of air service to the region. United Airlines planned to begin operating four daily flights from Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport to Chicago O'Hare, with four return flights.
The new service would have added to the existing air service, which currently includes:
- American Airlines flights to Chicago (two to three daily depending on the day)
- Delta Air Lines flights to Detroit
The addition of United would have brought the total daily flights to Chicago to six or seven, depending on the day.
Impact on Passengers
United Airlines is working with passengers who have already booked flights to provide alternative options or refunds, according to the airport announcement.
Tickets for the flights went on sale in late January, and many travelers may have planned around the expected April 30 start date.
Airport Director Comments
"We remain optimistic about the new service and believe it will bring expanded travel opportunities and long-term benefits to the community," said Craig Williams, Airport Director for the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport.
Williams emphasized that airline schedules and start dates are determined solely by the airlines and the FAA, not by the airport itself.
Current Air Service
Despite the United delay, Delta Air Lines recently added a fourth daily flight between Kalamazoo-Battle Creek and Detroit Metropolitan Airport. The new Delta service begins on June 7th, offering flights at four different times daily:
- 5:30 a.m.
- 11:42 a.m.
- 3:04 p.m.
- 6:00 p.m.
The additional Delta flight strengthens connectivity to destinations worldwide and reinforces the importance of supporting local air service, Williams stated.
United's History with Kalamazoo
United Airlines last operated out of Kalamazoo on January 3, 2022, when it canceled the daily route amid multiple route cancellities by the airline across the country due to pandemic-related shortages.
The new planned service would mark United's return to the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek airport since that cancellation.
What Changed
The delay affects the start date but not the service itself. United continues to work with the airport and passengers to ensure a smooth launch when the new flights begin on June 1.
The airport has been monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available from United Airlines and the FAA.
