*Four-Year Absence at Local Airport Extended*
KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Passengers looking for new United Airlines service between Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport and Chicago will have to wait longer than expected. The airline has delayed the launch of its direct flights to June 1 from the original April 30 start date.
Airport officials say the delay stems from temporary capacity constraints at Chicago O'Hare International Airport imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration.
What Happened
The Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport announced in January that United Airlines flights would begin on April 30. Those flights would have included four daily trips to Chicago O'Hare and four daily return flights.
In an announcement, the airport confirmed those flights will now not start until June 1. They say United Airlines is working with passengers who already booked flights for the original start date.
Tickets for the flights went on sale in late January, giving travelers advance notice of the upcoming service.
The FAA Factor
Airport director Craig Williams explained that the FAA placed operational restrictions at O'Hare due to temporary capacity constraints. These restrictions affect both United Airlines and American Airlines.
"The decision was made by the airlines and FAA; the airport had no input into the matter," Williams said.
The situation is not unique to Kalamazoo. United Airlines has delayed the start of service on six routes from Chicago O'Hare, including flights to Bloomington, Champaign, La Crosse, Lansing, and Rochester.
End of a Four-Year Absence
Once the service resumes, it will mark the end of a four-year absence in Kalamazoo. United Airlines last operated flights to the area before pulling out four years ago.
The delay leaves some regional airports in an uncertain position. Smaller communities that rely on connections to major hubs like Chicago may face temporary disruptions in regional mobility.
What This Means for Travelers
For Kalamazoo residents and visitors, the June 1 start date means a month without the new direct service. Those who booked flights for April or May will need to find alternative arrangements.
Travelers may need to consider:
- Flying from nearby airports like Detroit or Grand Rapids
- Connecting through other major hubs
- Waiting until June for the new service to begin
The airport says United Airlines is communicating with affected passengers about rebooking options.
FAA Restrictions Ongoing
The FAA first introduced voluntary flight caps at O'Hare in 2023 to address chronic delays caused by staffing shortages in air traffic control and heavy demand. These measures have been extended multiple times, affecting airline growth plans across several seasons.
Chicago O'Hare has been subject to FAA-imposed limits on hourly flight movements, particularly during peak travel periods. United, which operates a major hub at the airport, has had to rebalance its schedule to comply with these restrictions.
These operational limits often mean airlines must prioritize existing services over new additions. Regional routes typically generate lower revenue per flight than long-haul or transcontinental services, making them more vulnerable to operational constraints.
Looking Ahead
The airport and airline have not indicated whether this is a permanent delay or simply a postponement. United Airlines may reassess demand levels before confirming new launch dates later in the year.
For now, travelers to and from Kalamazoo should expect further schedule updates as summer approaches. The airport remains committed to providing connectivity to Chicago and beyond, even if timing shifts due to factors beyond its control.
