What Was Scheduled for This Month Is Now Waiting Until Midsummer
The anticipated return of United Airlines to Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport won't happen this month as originally planned. Instead of launching service on April 30, the airline has delayed its expansion to June 1.
The postponement affects four daily flights from Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport (AZO) to Chicago O'Hare International Airport, plus four return flights. The airline had announced the new service in January, with tickets going on sale in late January for passengers who had already booked travel.
FAA Restrictions at O'Hare Drive the Delay
Airport officials confirmed the delay stems from temporary capacity constraints at Chicago O'Hare, which prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to place restrictions on both United Airlines and American Airlines. In response, United decided to push back the start date for all airports receiving expanded service, including Kalamazoo-Battle Creek.
The airport emphasized that airline schedules and start dates are determined solely by the airlines and the FAA, not by airport officials themselves.

United Airlines is currently working with passengers who have already booked flights to provide alternative options or refunds.
Six or Seven Flights Daily Now Expected
Despite the postponement, airport officials remain optimistic about the new service and believe it will bring expanded travel opportunities and long-term benefits to the community.
Once the flights begin in June, the addition of United will increase the number of daily flights to Chicago from six or seven per day. Currently, American Airlines operates two or three flights daily to Chicago out of AZO, depending on the day. Delta continues to fly to Detroit.
United last flew out of Kalamazoo on January 3, 2022, at which point the airline canceled its daily route amid multiple route cancellations across the country due to pandemic-related shortages.
Local Impact
For residents of Kalamazoo and surrounding communities including Portage, Comstock, Oshtemo, Richland, Vicksburg, and Mattawan, the delay means fewer travel options until mid-June. However, the expansion still represents significant growth for the region's transportation infrastructure and could attract more business travel and visitors to the area.
Airport officials say the service remains on track to begin on schedule for June 1, pending FAA approval and continued coordination with United Airlines.
