A 30-year-old Van Buren County man is facing six felony charges after deputies said he attacked a man with bear mace and a blunt object, kidnapped a woman he had a relationship with, and shot her vehicle with a paintball gun.
Shane Williams, 30, of Van Buren County, was charged Monday on felonious assault, unlawful imprisonment, possession of a pneumatic gun during the commission of a felony, resisting and obstructing police, arson of personal property, and interfering with electronic communications.
According to a report from the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to Williams ex-girlfriend's home on April 9, asking an acquaintance to remove his belongings from her home.
When the man arrived at the home, he found his belongings being burned. The report states Williams then attacked the man, spraying him in the face, head and back with bear mace. Williams also allegedly attacked the man with a metal object, also breaking the windows on the man's vehicle.
The man was able to escape the scene and reach a local party store, where he called 911.
Emergency responders took the 31-year-old to the hospital to be decontaminated and treated for minor injuries.
By the time deputies arrived, the 30-year-old had left the scene.
Deputies searched for their suspect and the homeowner throughout the night but did not find them.
Friday, deputies received a report from the homeowner, identified as the assault suspect's ex-girlfriend, saying after the initial assault the 30-year-old forced her to drive him from the scene and hide him.
After she was able to escape she said he came back to her house and shot her vehicle with a paintball gun.
After these reports, deputies conducted an extensive search of the area, involving deployment of a K-9 unit, and eventually found the 30-year-old hiding in a nearby garage trying to conceal himself under various items.
Williams was arrested at the scene without incident and lodged at the Van Buren County Jail.
He is currently facing multiple felony charges related to the incident near M-43 and 25th Street in Paw Paw.
