Verizon Fiber Cut Leaves Kalamazoo County Without Cell Service

Kalamazoo County residents woke up Thursday to a major cell service outage caused by intentional vandalism.

Verizon services were down across multiple towns as early as 10 a.m. on Thursday. The affected areas included Portage, Galesburg, Climax Township, Oshtemo Township, Vicksburg, Schoolcraft, Richland, Augusta, Kalamazoo Township and Scotts.

Verizon services are down for customers in Kalamazoo County including Portage, Galesburg, Climax Township, Oshtemo Township, Vicksburg, Schoolcraft, Richland, Augusta, Kalamazoo Township and Scotts on Thursday as of at least 10 a.m., according to a Verizon spokesperson and the Verizon network status site.

The company confirmed the outage was caused by a cut fiber cable.

The cut cable was an act of vandalism, the spokesperson said, though how many people were involved has not yet been announced.

Verizon engineers were actively working to restore service. The estimated restoration time appeared to be Thursday at 10:06 p.m.

Their engineers are aware of the situation and working to resolve it quickly, the spokesperson said.

The outage affected customers using Verizon's network. Verizon spokesperson Aimee Knox addressed the situation in an email.

We are aware of a vandalism-related fiber cut causing service interruption for some customers in the Kalamazoo area. Our engineers are actively working with our partners to quickly resolve the issue.

Verizon apologized for the inconvenience.

The cut fiber cable was intentional vandalism. Verizon did not disclose the identity of the person or people responsible.
