A rising junior who still has not completed two varsity seasons has Southwest Michigan softball fans talking

*Lena Lancaster* has not even finished two years of varsity softball at Vicksburg High School. That has not stopped her coach from projecting a future at the highest level of the sport.

"Lena is going to be a Division I ball player," Vicksburg second-year head coach Steve Peters said.

Lancaster earned the prediction by dominating the diamond for Vicksburg during the 2026 season. She also earned the loudest cheer from the region's softball community last week.

Southwest Michigan fans voted Lancaster as the MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette Athlete of the Week, giving her 3,632 of 6,387 total votes. That was 57 percent of the poll.

Marcellus' Hannah Sharp finished runner-up with 478 votes, or 7 percent of the total.

Playing behind a power hitter

Lancaster's value to Vicksburg goes beyond her own production. Peters said she provides critical protection behind the team's leadoff threat.

"She's really provided a lot of cover for our No. 3 hitter, Kayla Chisholm," Peters said. "She's been a really nice piece behind Kayla that teams can't necessarily just work around."

That kind of lineup construction matters in close games. Opposing pitchers have to respect both hitters, and Lancaster's presence forces defenses to adjust.

Playoffs approaching

The regular season is winding down across Michigan. The MHSAA district finals are scheduled for May 28-30. Quarterfinals follow on June 9, with semifinals and finals set for June 11-13 at Secchia Stadium at Michigan State University in East Lansing.

Lancaster's vote total suggests fans expect her to be a factor through the postseason. The Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association will announce its updated state rankings heading into the tournament, and Vicksburg's chances improve with a player like Lancaster in the lineup.

For a rising junior who has not yet completed two full varsity seasons, the ceiling is high. Peters already knows where it leads.
