A Kalamazoo man is facing charges in connection with a theft at a hardware store in Mattawan this summer, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Department.
The sheriff's department says it responded to Neils Hardware on Red Arrow Highway on August 17 and obtained surveillance video that captured clear images of the suspect, despite his attempt to conceal his identity. The images were then shared to police throughout the area.
A Van Buren County Sheriff's Office narcotics detective was able to identify the suspect based on his tattoos, the department said.
With help from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department, the 38-year-old suspect was located and arrested. The sheriff's department says the man initially denied the theft but later confessed.
Police say the suspect also provided information regarding stolen property he had sold. Two of the three stolen power tools have since been recovered, and investigators are continuing to search for the remaining item.
The suspect is now charged with felony first-degree retail fraud and habitual offender, fourth offense, which is a felony enhancement.
The Van Buren County Sheriff's Department thanked neighboring police agencies for helping it solve the case.
