Charles Edward Nightingale passed away peacefully at his home under hospice care on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the age of 93. The Comstock native lived a life grounded in faith, family, and community service that touched many hearts.
Born April 4, 1933, in Comstock, Michigan, Nightingale was a lifelong resident of the area he loved. He graduated from Athens High School with the class of 1951 and married Mary Ann Hammond on June 21, 1952, at Factoryville Bible Church. Mary Ann preceded him in death on September 27, 2013.
During his working years, Nightingale was a skilled sheet metal worker and a proud member of Union Local 360. He also served as a Word of Life leader from 1969 to 2010 at Factoryville Bible Church, where he was a lifelong member. His passion for music and singing enriched the lives of those around him.
Charles’s generosity extended beyond his immediate family. For 44 years, he and Mary Ann served as foster parents to the Copas family—Evelyn, Rosetta, and Ray—offering love and support that left a lasting impact.
Nightingale cherished his role as a grandfather and took great pride in attending every event involving his grandchildren. His love for life included a fondness for the Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, and the University of Michigan. He was also known for his deep patriotism.
He is survived by his children: Cynthia Hostetler of Sturgis, Cathy Mostrom of Sturgis, and Chris Nightingale of Colon. His daughter-in-law Debrah Nightingale also survives him. His sister Carole Foster lives in Kalamazoo.
The family counts 37 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Two more great-grandchildren and one more great-great-grandchild are expected very soon.
Nightingale was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Ann Nightingale, his brother Joseph R. Nightingale, his sister Beverly Nightingale, his son David Nightingale, and daughter-in-law Cheri Nightingale.
