A Galesburg Community Comes Together to Mourn
*Whitney Elizabeth Learman, a Galesburg, Michigan native and 2024 graduate of Western Michigan University*, has died. Friends, coworkers, and neighbors are sharing tributes that paint a portrait of a young woman defined by her empathy and her willingness to show up for others.
News of her passing spread quickly across social media, where messages poured in from people whose lives she touched in the small town of Galesburg and throughout the greater Kalamazoo area.
A Life Built on Service
Learman studied at Kalamazoo Valley Community College before earning her degree from WMU in 2024. She worked as a server at Cove Lakeside Bistro in Kalamazoo, a role she held since June 2017. She had also worked as a Financial Solution Specialist at Advia Credit Union and briefly at Frito-Lay, according to Chemical City Paper.
"She healed a part of my soul," Gwen Haugh Matthews wrote of Learman. "I'm so honored to have been a part of birthdays, college graduation, her wedding, and all things Whitney."
Matthews, who lost her son Logan, said Learman entered her life at one of her lowest moments and never left her side. Learman had messaged Matthews just days before her own passing on Logan's birthday, writing that she loved her and that Logan had surely sent her into Matthews' life for a reason.
A Friend Who Showed Up
Rachael Sealy, a close friend, posted a tribute on Facebook shortly after the news broke.
"Life is so unfair," Sealy wrote. "You were always there with the best advice, a listening ear, and a heart big enough for everyone around you. You made it so obvious how much you loved your friends."
Patricia Tyler described how Learman helped guide her through a dark period in her life. The two bonded over their shared empathy for others. Tyler noted that Learman had been chosen as her daughter's godmother and never got the chance to hold the baby girl.
Remembered in Galesburg and Beyond
Learman was married and had built a life full of meaningful relationships. Friends remembered her through personal touchstones, including Tom Petty music and the movie Matilda.
She had participated in a community walk supporting those in need and had allowed Matthews to write and publicly share a story about her generous spirit at the event, according to The Union Star.
Galesburg and the wider community she touched are grieving the loss of a woman who made every person in her life feel chosen.
