A bicyclist was killed Monday night after being struck by an Amtrak train in Kalamazoo, police confirmed Tuesday.

The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Stadium Drive and Oliver Street, close to Western Michigan University's main campus. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said the man was attempting to cross the railroad tracks when the train hit him.

Scene Investigated by Crime Lab

Officers arrived at the tracks and pronounced the man dead at the scene. His name and age have not been released, according to KDPS.

News crews at the scene around 10 p.m. saw the Kalamazoo Forensics Crime Lab and multiple KDPS cruisers surrounding the tracks. Investigators were seen moving what appeared to be an intact bicycle from near the tracks into the crime lab van.

"Officers were called around 9:30 p.m. after a train reported hit a bicyclist who was attempting to cross the railroad tracks at Oliver Street near Stadium Drive," according to a KDPS news release cited by WWMT.

Amtrak Train Departed After Delay

The stopped train was identified as an Amtrak Midwest Siemens SC-44 Charger #4603. An LED ticker on the side displayed "Route 354," which according to Amtrak's website is a daily eastbound passenger train that departs Chicago in the late afternoon and stops at the Kalamazoo Transportation Center before heading toward Detroit.

Passengers remained inside the train cabins while officers moved along the sides of the train with flashlights. Crime scene tape was placed around the train.

The train pulled away from the scene around 10:50 p.m., while KDPS and the crime lab remained on site to continue their investigation. Traffic on westbound Stadium Drive had been reduced to one lane but was reopened shortly after the train departed.

News outlets reached out to Amtrak for comment. Amtrak officials said they were working to gather more information about what happened, according to WWMT.
