Mattawan's Murray Street Brewing Co. has announced it will no longer brew beer, adding its name to a growing list of Michigan craft beer businesses that have shut down in 2026.
The brewery, located at 57620 Murray Street in downtown Mattawan, first opened in December 2021 inside a historic red barn that was originally built as a livery stable in 1868. Over the past few years, it built a reputation as a casual, community-focused gathering spot, known for house brews including its signature "Matty Light" and for patrons bringing in takeout from neighboring restaurants to enjoy at the taproom.
The owners said the decision was not easy. In a lengthy post on the brewery's Facebook page, they wrote: "It is with heavy hearts that we announce Murray Street Brewing Co. will no longer be brewing beer. This was not an easy decision. Changes in our personal lives and the challenges of sustainably operating a brewery of our size in the current industry have led us to this point."
At this point, the brewery has stopped brewing and will continue to serve its remaining inventory through the end of September, or until the beer runs out.
The closure reflects a broader, ongoing shift across Michigan's craft beer landscape. The post-boom market has hit taprooms hard with rising costs for ingredients, labor, rent, and packaging. A crowded market, alongside changing consumer drinking habits toward ciders, seltzers, and non-alcoholic options, has squeezed smaller independent taprooms from every angle.
Within recent weeks, several other Michigan breweries announced closures, including Stumblebum Brewing in Troy, Drifa Brewing in Marquette, Brewery Faison in Detroit, and Four Circles Brewing in Brighton.
While Murray Street Brewing is closing this chapter, the owners left the door open for the future, hoping the right team comes along to buy the historic barn and carry it into its next phase.
