*SCHOOLCRAFT TOWNSHIP, Mich.* — Injuries were reported Friday evening after a small plane crashed on Township Park Road in rural Houghton County, according to the Michigan State Police and the National Transportation Safety Board.
The crash was reported at 7:45 p.m. Friday, according to MSP Spl/Lt. Ashley Miller, public information officer for the Seventh District. Miller confirmed that state troopers responded to the scene of a small plane crash on Township Park Road in Schoolcraft Township.
"There were no fatalities, however, I believe there were injuries," Miller said. She did not provide the names of the injured or details about the extent of their injuries, and said a full report had not yet been filed as of Monday morning.
The National Transportation Safety Board, which handles all aircraft accidents in the United States, responded shortly after 3 p.m. Monday to a request for information from the Daily Mining Gazette.
"NTSB is investigating the Aug. 14 crash of a Taylorcraft DCO-65 airplane near Copper City, Michigan. Preliminary information indicates the airplane lost power during takeoff from a private grass strip due to unknown circumstances," the agency said.
The NTSB said its investigation will focus on three primary areas: the pilot, the aircraft, and the operating environment.
A preliminary report is expected to be available within 30 days and can be accessed by searching the NTSB investigations database at my.ntsb.gov. The agency said the preliminary report will contain factual information gathered during the initial phase of the investigation.
A final report, which will detail the probable cause of the crash along with any contributing factors, is expected within 12 to 24 months.
