Beacon Health System Announces Major Restructuring as Compass Group USA Faces Job Losses
*KALAMAZOO, Mich.* — Beacon Health System is fundamentally reshaping its operational structure, bringing nutritional services, environmental services, and patient transport in-house at four of its facilities. The announcement has resulted in the immediate termination of more than 250 contracted workers employed by Compass Group USA, Inc.
According to Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity records, Compass Group USA, Inc. has issued Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) letters to affected employees at multiple Beacon Health locations, with layoffs set to begin July 1, 2026.
Facilities Affected by Layoffs
The WARN letters identify the following Beacon Health facilities impacted by the restructuring:
- Beacon Allegan
- Beacon Health & Fitness Center in Kalamazoo
- Beacon Kalamazoo
- Beacon Dowagiac
- Beacon Plainwell
The affected positions span a wide range of essential hospital operations, including food service workers, cooks, patient services staff, retail managers, dieticians, housekeepers, administrative assistants, custodians, supervisors, and more.
Beacon Health Brings Services In-House
A spokesperson for Beacon Health System provided the following statement regarding the decision:
Beacon Health System is bringing nutritional, environmental and transport services in-house at Beacon Kalamazoo, Beacon Allegan, Beacon Dowagiac and Beacon Plainwell hospitals, as well as Beacon Health & Fitness Kalamazoo, effective July 1, 2026, upon conclusion of an agreement with Georgia-based TouchPoint Support Services, a division of Compass Group USA. As a locally owned, locally led health system, integrating these services allows us to better align with our mission, improve efficiency and reinvest resources into patient care.
The decision marks a strategic shift for Beacon Health, which has long partnered with Compass Group USA through TouchPoint Support Services to provide support services across its Southwest Michigan facilities. The contract included Beacon Kalamazoo, Beacon Allegan, Beacon Dowagiac, Beacon Plainwell, and the Beacon Health & Fitness Center.
Regional Impact
The layoffs represent a significant consolidation for Beacon Health's support services operations. Beacon Health System, headquartered in Kalamazoo, operates five hospitals across Southwest Michigan: Beacon Kalamazoo, Beacon Allegan, Beacon Dowagiac, Beacon Plainwell, and Beacon Lee Hospital in Jackson County.
The announcement comes as healthcare systems nationwide grapple with rising operational costs and the need to control expenses while maintaining quality patient care. Beacon Health's decision to bring services in-house reflects a broader trend among regional health systems seeking greater control over their support operations.
Workers and Community Concerns
The WARN letters were received by state officials earlier this month, giving affected workers advance notice of the impending layoffs. The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity tracks such notifications to ensure employers provide adequate notice to workers facing job loss.
Local community leaders and labor advocates have expressed concern about the impact on these essential service workers. Food service and environmental staff are among the most vulnerable employees in healthcare settings, often earning minimum wage or low hourly rates.
What This Means for Patients and Staff
While Beacon Health states the move will allow them to "better align with our mission and improve efficiency," the transition poses significant challenges. Healthcare workers in these support roles often have positions that have been held for years, and sudden termination can disrupt hospital operations.
The in-house services will now be managed directly by Beacon Health, meaning former Compass Group employees will no longer be employed by the company. Beacon Health has not yet detailed its plans for these positions or whether it intends to retain any of the workforce.
Broader Context
This announcement follows similar consolidation efforts by Beacon Health and other healthcare systems across Michigan. The integration of support services has become increasingly common as health systems seek to reduce costs and gain more direct control over their operations.
The decision reflects changing dynamics in the healthcare industry, where support services that were once outsourced to specialized companies are being brought back in-house by hospital systems. This trend allows health systems to have more direct oversight of quality control and cost management while potentially reducing long-term expenses.
Next Steps
Affected workers will have the opportunity to explore their options, including unemployment benefits and retraining programs. The WARN letters typically provide workers with information about their rights and potential benefits available to them.
Beacon Health has not yet announced its plans for the vacated positions or whether it intends to retain any of the former Compass Group workforce. The transition to in-house operations will require Beacon Health to recruit, hire, and train its own staff to fill these essential roles.
Contact Information
Workers with questions about the layoffs can contact their local workforce development agencies or visit the Michigan Department of Labor website for assistance with unemployment benefits and retraining resources.
