Hit-and-Run Driver Strikes Utility Pole, Causes Widespread Power Outage in Kalamazoo
*KALAMAZOO, Mich.* — Some residents in Kalamazoo were without power on Sunday morning after a vehicle crashed into a utility pole and fled the scene, leaving around 315 Consumers Energy customers in the dark.
The incident occurred early Sunday at 100 E. Paterson Street in Kalamazoo, where emergency responders quickly closed the roadway between North Burdick Street and North Pitcher Street due to downed power lines.

Multiple transformers are damaged and downed power lines are in the road near 100 E. Paterson St. after a vehicle hit a utility pole early on Sunday morning, causing around 350 Consumers Energy customers to be without power, according to Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) officers.
KDPS officers categorized the crash as a hit-and-run and did not provide any information regarding the identity or direction of the driver involved in the incident.

According to the Consumers Energy Outage Map, the outage was first reported at 3:15 a.m., with an estimated restoration time of 2:15 p.m. Crews were assigned to the area immediately following the crash.
As of 1:20 p.m. on Sunday, some power had been restored, but the majority of customers impacted still had an estimated restoration time of 7:15 p.m.

Road Closure and Traffic Impact
East Paterson Street between North Burdick Street and North Pitcher Street was completely shut down due to the downed power lines in the roadway. Emergency crews worked to clear the debris and repair the damaged infrastructure throughout Sunday morning.
Community Impact
While the outage affected primarily residential customers in the area, the incident highlights the vulnerability of utility infrastructure to vehicle collisions. Residents in the affected area were without power for approximately four hours before restoration began.
The KDPS did not release information about whether anyone was injured in the crash or if the vehicle sustained significant damage upon impact with the utility pole.
